about

I first wrote Midnight Mass about seven years ago in Dun Laoghaire in Ireland. I have a pretty serious love of Christmas music, and find it pretty hard to hear those songs at any other time of year. Similarly, I found myself fairly unable to work on this other than in the depths of winter, which is probably why it took so long to get it finished.

I'm pretty used to the song by now, but it's got a lot that I love. I love the scruffy, shadowy sound of the guitar. I love the quietness of the first chorus, the way it steadily opens up like growing candlelight. And above all, I love Carol Anne MacGowan's vocals, which make the song something so much better.

Fun fact: any time Carol Anne sends me vocals for a Winter Aid song, I end up throwing out all my vocals and rerecording them so they don't embarrass the song next to hers.

Anyway, happy Christmas, or whatever you're having yourself. See you in 2024.

lyrics

it’s christmas eve
and i feel the same
there’s candlewax
on my fingers again
the sound of the snow under your feet takes me home

it’s christmas eve
and i can pretend
i’ll stay when i wake
and it’s not the end
the house smells of smoke
the cold has got into my bed

so have a nice christmas
have a nice life
and maybe next year
we’ll get it right

there’s wine on your lips
the guests turn to go
the candle is out
the fire is low
the crunch of the snow under my feet takes me home
no cars on the street
no post in the hall
no knock on the door
i don’t miss it at all
it’s christmas eve
and i can’t believe
we’re alone

have a nice christmas
have a nice night
and maybe next year
we’ll get it right

have a nice christmas
have a nice night
and maybe next year
we’ll get it right
